Star Wars Text
Crawl
|
|
This project is
an exercise in
After Effects 3D
layers and
cameras. Also
new to me on
this one is a
composition
nested in a
composition. The
scrolling text
is one
composition
embedded into
the main title
zooming and the
tilting down to
Tattooine. I
used the movie
soundtrack for
the audio. |

Time Lapse |
This is a time
lapse video of
Portland looking
outside my
bedroom window
on Saturday,
March 30th 2002,
where just under
six hours of a
partly cloudy
afternoon is
condensed down
to 35 seconds.

Q Effect |
|
This video
demonstrates
what I call the
Q effect. In
Star Trek The
Next Generation,
the enigmatic Q
causes things to
appear and
disappear while
still moving in
the shot. Here I
make the box
sitting next to
the door vanish.
Afterwards I
spoil the effect
by picking up
the box. |

Light Saber |
|
The light saber
from Star Wars
was one of the
main reasons for
me to delve into
the realm of
special effects.
With this video
I try my hand at
rotoscoping an
ordinary broom
into a Jedi
weapon. Note
that I digitally
remove the broom
handle right
before ignition
of the saber and
right after I
dowse it. |

Beam Me Up |
|
When we saw
Capt. Kirk beam
up to the
Enterprise for
the first time,
how many of us
wished that we
too could be
whisked away
molecule by
molecule? With
this FX shot, I
dematerialize
the way Kirk
did. I use the
same type of
effect as the
original series
but the sound
from The Next
Generation. I
used gold and
silver glitter
swirling in a
large glass of
water for the
beam effect. |

Simple
Bluescreen (Greenscreen) |
|
This is an
experiment to
see the quality
of Adobe
Premiere's
chroma key, or
what I like to
call the
weatherman
effect. I shot
footage of me in
front of WPXT's
greenscreen. The
key isn't bad
but the edge's
aren't clean.
This could be a
factor of how
well (how poor,
really) the
green wall is
lit. Overall the
key is
satisfactory. |

MultiME Multiple
Mes |
|
This experiment
taught me a
great deal about
lighting in a
special effect
shot. This type
of effect
requires an
exacting degree
of attention to
detail. The
existence and
placement of
lighting and
shadow is
crucial for the
outcome of the
effect. Thus,
this shot which
I have three of
me in my living
room, failed.
This particular
version is my
third attempt.
If it wasn't for
the middle matte
which is made
visible by my
shadow, it would
be almost
usable. |
